New analysis pegs Asia-Pacific data centre capacity as the fastest-growing — and most under-covered — infrastructure class in the region, with 89% of APAC capacity now exposed to heat and drought stress as Malaysia and South Korea lead the build-out. It's the physical-world bill coming due for the AI boom, and insurers haven't caught up to price it yet.

Every "AI disrupts insurance" story points at underwriting engines and chatbots. This is the other side of it — AI is creating a brand-new, fast-growing asset class that needs cover, and capacity is struggling to keep pace.

AFCA has hit out at both the insurers' and brokers' redrafted codes of practice, warning the insurers' version creates "perverse outcomes" by making the code contractually enforceable while diluting independent-review recommendations into mere guidance. On the brokers' side, it wants remuneration disclosure "for all policies, for any product" — calling it the industry's "final chance to do the right thing."

Why it matters

AFCA isn't shy about the alternative — it says there's "a compelling case for government to intervene" if the codes don't lift. Worth watching how the ICA and NIBA respond before these are finalised.

ASIC's review of eight major motor brands — covering 72% of the market, including Suncorp, Allianz, IAG, RAC and Youi — found none clearly explained the "key factors" behind price increases in quote or renewal documents. With premiums up 42% since 2019, only 30% of customers even contact their insurer at renewal, though 31% of those who do land a reduction.

Renewal disclosure is about to get more scrutiny, not less — insurers that can't clearly explain a price rise now have a specific ASIC benchmark sitting on the record the next time this gets reviewed.

ASIC is proposing to extend three claims-handling relief instruments through to 2032-33 — covering sub-authorisation of claims staff, Financial Services Guide exemptions, and the family violence settlement safeguard. Consultation runs until 8 September 2026.

Why it matters

Unglamorous, but these are the rules that keep claims teams functioning day to day — worth flagging before the September deadline if your business relies on any of the three.

Suncorp's net profit fell to $1.03 billion, down 43.7% on last year, after 32 separate weather events (18 of them over $10 million each) pushed natural hazard costs past its allowance. Gross written premium still grew 2.7% to $15.4 billion, and the insurer has locked in a new five-year reinsurance structure aimed at smoothing out exactly this kind of volatility.

Why it matters

The allowance-versus-reality gap is the story every insurer's FY26 result is quietly wrestling with — Suncorp's already lifted its FY27 hazard allowance to $1.8 billion.

QBE's H1 net profit rose to $1.46 billion (AUD), gross written premium up 6%, with QBE Re now targeting $6 billion in premium by 2030, up from roughly $4 billion today. CEO Andrew Horton flagged infrastructure, cyber facilities, data centres and energy as the growth lines to watch.

IAG's FY26 net profit fell 24.8% to $1.02 billion on higher natural peril costs, even as underlying insurance profit rose 2.3% and GWP grew 7.6% to $18.4 billion — driven almost entirely by retail and the RACQ acquisition. Commercial lines are stuck in a tougher pricing cycle management expects to persist through FY27.

Why it matters

IAG explicitly flagged "accelerating" AI investment as part of closing that gap — another data point for the AI-and-distribution thread running through this issue.

Edge Underwriting has launched a standalone $2 million liability policy for tradespeople and property owners who unintentionally disturb asbestos during routine work — covering both property contamination and bodily injury claims, including asbestosis. It fills a gap that's existed because standard liability policies exclude asbestos entirely, leaving unlicensed contractors exposed the moment a renovation or repair job uncovers it unexpectedly.

Why it matters

A clean example of a real coverage gap getting solved with a genuinely new product rather than a workaround — worth watching if Edge expands it further.

NEOS — an Australian life insurer that designs and distributes cover through financial advisers rather than selling direct to consumers — has enhanced its underwriting platform so clients can now complete underwriting questionnaires online, rather than the process running entirely through an adviser.

Why it matters

Not a flashy AI story, but exactly the kind of unglamorous digitisation that actually changes day-to-day adviser workflow.

The ACCC has approved Ambrose Construct Group's acquisition of Major Loss Builders, consolidating two of the country's largest insurance repair and restoration operators. The regulator found the combined market share "minimal," with plenty of alternative suppliers remaining to keep the merged entity honest.

Why it matters

Some independent repairers raised competition concerns — worth watching whether smaller players feel the squeeze regardless of what the ACCC's modelling says.
